SARF Course: Non-Motorised Transport Planning and Design: PE 29-31 May 2017

The well presented SARF course, “Non-Motorised Transport: Planning and Development”, held in Port Elizabeth on 29-31 May 2017, was attended by 25 delegates.  The presenters were Dr Hubrecht Ribbens and Mr Louis de Waal, both experts in the field of NMT and extremely passionate about this important subject.

Delegates learned how Transport Planning and Operations are gaining recognition in Transport Policy and Strategy with regard to its role in Sustainable Transport, Universal Access and the Greening of Transport, and as an important role as a feeder to public transport systems, including rail, BRT, bus and minibus taxis.

Delegates were taught how to plan and design for non-motorised transport modes, including pedestrians, cyclists and animal drawn transport. The latest Government policies and guidelines impacting on NMT practices in South Africa, include:

# The National Dept. of Transport’s NMT Facility Guidelines, 2014, and The National Non-Motorised Transport Policy, 2008.

# The Dept. of Environmental Affairs NMT Best Practice Manual: Green Cities- Promoting the NMT Agenda, 2014.

# The promotion of the use of NMT as part of the BRT systems.

# The Development of Bicycle Master Plans and a Non-Motorised Transport Policy. The city of Cape Town is a leader in this field.
