SARF Trains 24 Ladies for City of Cape Town at the Ndabeni Depot.

Following a highly successful on-site training session of 19 very enthusiastic ladies in June 2016, The City of Cape Town recently put out another request to the SA Road Federation for further on-site training in best practices in road maintenance.

This time there were 24 women who are currently on an Expanded Public Works Program contract. The training, carried out by specialist John Onraet, consisted of a morning session in class learning the basics of road maintenance, such as terminology, base preparation, identification of correct materials, and application and compaction principles. This was followed by a critique of actual activities previously photographed. The second day was spent actually preparing base materials, priming and application and compaction of asphalt materials in two large patches.

For most of the ladies, this was new technology and they carried out the work with high levels of enthusiasm and produced excellent work, demonstrating that ladies can do just as well as the men in this work environment.
