DESIGN OF ASPHALT FOR ROAD PAVEMENTS

1 – 3 AUGUST 2017  –  CAPE  TOWN

UNIVERSITY OF STELLENBOSCH  BUSINESS SCHOOL  –  BELLVILLE  PARK  CAMPUS

This was the first time that this new course was presented in Cape Town.  The course deals with the Design of Asphalt Mixes for Roads in general and is based on TRH 8 and SABITA Manual 35 Design and Use of Asphalt in Road Pavements, which was developed to establish a common base for the Design of Asphalt Mixes in South Africa.

This is a 3-day course that is presented by a team of extremely knowledgeable Asphalt Specialists.  The team is led by Dr. Joseph Boateng (CSIR) and includes Dr. Emile Horak, Herman Marais (Much Asphalt), Wynand Nortje (National Asphalt), Joe Grobler (SMEC), and Sasheen Raijkumar (SANRAL ER).

Course delegates sit a two hour exam on the third day.  Those who score above 70% in the examination, receive a certificate of competency, those who don’t, receive a certificate of attendance.  There is also an opportunity to re-write the exam at a later date.

Piet Myburgh, the lead Engineer who played a key roll in putting the course structure together did the introductory address to the 36 delegates on 1 August 2017.

The 36 course delegates represented SANRAL, City of Cape Town, CetLab and the balance was from Cape Town based Consulting Engineering companies.
