COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course provides a practical, “hands-on” introduction to road building materials and road construction techniques. It introduces the terms, jargon and buzz-words regularly used in the road building industry and is aimed at enabling candidates to become familiar with what, where, and how materials are used in road construction.
The course includes a visit to a materials testing laboratory and extensive use is made of hand samples so that candidates are able to gain a better practical understanding of road construction materials. Comprehensive PowerPoint presentations are used to make information easier to digest.
The course covers:
- Road pavement components
- Most important properties of soils and aggregates
- Materials aspects of road construction
- Stabilisation
- Basic bitumen technology
- Introduction to surfacing seals
- Basics of hot-mixed asphalt
- Overview of materials investigations
- Overview of pavement rehabilitation
- design options
- Basics of pavement design
- Basics of concrete technology
This is not a high level course and is aimed at Engineers, Technologists and Technicians with up to 5 years post-graduate experience, who are involved in the design, supervision, and construction of surfaced roads
Delegates can claim 2 ECSA CPD points or SACPCMP 10 CPD hours allocated
