Planning and Design for Non-Motorised Transport (NMT)

The SARF course entitled “ Planning and Design for Non-Motorised Transport (NMT)” was presented in Cape Town at the SANRAL WR office from 24th to 26th August.

The course is given by Dr Hubrecht Ribbens (ex CSIR) and Louis de Waal (ex HHO Africa and now Chairman of the Bicycling Empowerment Network )

Dr Ribbens deals with the Pedestrian and Animal Drawn Transport , while de Waal deals with the Bicycle needs. There are several overlapping requirements for these modes of transport such as safety , conspicuity , etc. which have to be dealt with during the 3 days.
Throughout the world, NMT facilities are being implemented as they address lower transport costs ,better heath ,less pollution and occupy much less space
on roads. The policy of “Complete Streets” is also becoming an acceptable in town planning and NMT plays a big role in their designs.

The Cape Town Course was attended by 33 Transport and Town Planning professionals.
