SANRAL has R1.8bn of road construction projects planned for Sundays River municipality

The South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) has planned multiple road construction projects worth R1.8-billion in the Sundays River local municipality, in the Eastern Cape.
“In the Eastern Cape, we manage 4 952 km of our 22 214 km national road network. Our operations on the stretch of road that traverses the Sundays River local municipality will create over 900 job opportunities over the next five years,” says Sanral chairperson Themba Mhambi.
The R740-million improvement of the R335 from Motherwell to Addo is expected to take 43 months to complete and create an estimated 350 job opportunities, with 30 to 35 local small, medium-sized and microenterprises (SMMEs) to benefit.
The R270-million upgrade of the R336 between Kirkwood and Addo is estimated to take 24 months to complete and is expected to create over 220 job opportunities and benefit 40 SMMEs.
Phase 1 of the R72-million special maintenance project of the R355 from the Zuurberg Intersection to Nguni river has already started, with 50 to 100 job opportunities being created and 10 to 15 SMMEs subcontracted to work on the project.
Additionally, a Phase 1 R45-million special maintenance project of the R75 from the Kirkwood Intersection to Wolwefontein will start in February and be completed in December 2022.
Phase 2 projects include the R450-million improvement of the R335 from Motherwell to Addo, with construction expected to take 27 months. It will create an estimated 250 job opportunities.
The R310-million upgrade of the R336 between Kirkwood and Addo will take place over 30 months and is expected to create over 210 job opportunities, with 50 SMMEs benefitting.
A Phase 2 R87-million special maintenance project on the R342 from Nguni River Lodge to Paterson is currently at construction phase, and will create between 50 to 100 local job opportunities, with 10 to 15 SMMEs benefitting.
