SARF Course: Design, Application & Construction of Surfacing Seals: Port Elizabeth: 27-29 June 2017

The SARF course, “Design, Application and Construction of Surfacing Seals”, held in Port Elizabeth on 27-29 June 2017, 

in association with The Asphalt Academy, was very successful with 29 delegates attending. 

The presenter, Mr Gerhard van Zyl, often referred to as Gerrie van Seal, is the country’s top expert on road seals.

The intensive three-day course covered all aspects of seal design for conventional and modified binders using the revised 

TRH3 document, including:

 # Performance of surfacing seals;

# Pavement deterioration and condition assessment;

# Project identification and prioritization;

# Types of surfacing treatments and selection of appropriate measures;

# Seal design principles and surfacing techniques;

# Geotextile seals;

# Workshop using TRH3;

# An overview of surfacing equipment;

# Operation and calibration of binder distributors;

# Labour intensive seals;

#Conversion factors, formulae and calculations.
