TRAFFIC SIGNAL DESIGN AND MAINTENANCE

The course will provide a learning experience for all levels of experience – from beginners to well experienced practitioners and focus on the needs Municipal officials as well as consultants or contractors. The state of traffic signals in SA requires skilled professionals and the objective of this course is to develop these critical skills.

This course will be done over two days – physical attendance only, and will cover the following:

1. Traffic demand at intersections, Control of intersections, Legislation and Warrants
2. Basic principles of traffic signal timing optimisation, saturation flow, lost time, minimum time intervals, phases and stages
3. Timing calculations, analysis of area wide traffic signal systems, progression along arterials, bus priority
4. Intersection layout, signal heads, positioning of poles, road markings
5. Cable configurations, power supply, Controllers, theft and vandalism
6. Construction, maintenance and management
