My main interest is in road and traffic safety. This is founded on 30 years of experience in road planning, design (including road signs and markings) and construction, as well as transportation planning and traffic engineering, research and teaching. I worked for various employers and on various projects, gaining broad and detailed insights into the interaction between the road environment, human behaviour and vehicle dynamics. I was the roads engineer in the Kruger National Park from 1982 to 1985. I lectured in road safety, geometric design, traffic engineering and transportation planning at Stellenbosch University and Pretoria University and part time at the then Pretoria Technikon. I am an expert witness in court cases involving road factors and driver behaviour, with a focus on road safety. Cases involve road and work zone signage and markings, as well as design exceptions. I completed a PhD degree in 2015 and it was awarded in 2016 on a study of Road Maintenance Engineering Standards to fulfil the Legal Duties of Road Authorities towards Safe Roads. I have presented the ECSA accredited Road Safety Audit Course for the South African Road Federation since 2018. In April 2020 I completed the assessment and was awarded the International Road Federation accreditation as Road Safety Audit Team Leader.
