DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF SURFACED LOW VOLUME ROADS

The design and construction of surfaced low volume roads was presented at the Aviator Hotel in Kempton Park from 21-25 June.  This course was presented by a new look team of presenters.  A great mixture of both youth and experience.

On the youth’s side was new comer Everhardt Botha a Geometric Design lecturer from Tshwane University of Technology as well as Marco van Dijk an Urban Stormwater and Drainage lecturer from the University of Pretoria.  Marco van Dijk is not a new comer to SARF, he together with Edwin Kruger and Professor Fanie van Vuuren (UP) presented the Hydrological and Hydraulic Assessment Course.  Everhardt presented the Geometric Design of LVR on the first morning followed by Marco van Dijk presenting the drainage of LVR during the afternoon session of the first day.  Dr Phil Paige Green presented the material side of LVR on the second day.  Gerrie van Zyl (or Gerrie van Seal) as his is better known in the industry presented the surfacing of Low volume roadS based on Sabita manual 10  as well as the extensive experience that Gerrie had acquired through all the work that he and Phil had done in Africa and India.

The course delegates were representative of the Road Construction Industry, from the client; Sanral and Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport to Contractors and Consulting Engineers.

26 people attend this course.  Two Engineers from Ghana attended and said that they really benefited from attending the course. Dawie Erasmus SARF Honorary Treasurer introduced the SARF Training courses to his client in Ghana.
