Categories of CPD Activities and Credits

 

CPD credits must be accumulated from at least two of the three categories listed below.

👉 In addition:

  • A minimum of 1 credit per year must be obtained from Category 1
  • Each category has a maximum number of credits per year

Category 1: Developmental Activities

Credit Allocation:

  • 1 credit = 10 hours
  • Maximum: 4 credits (40 hours) per year

Structured learning activities are recognised under this category.

Included Activities:

  • Conferences
  • Congresses
  • Workshops
  • Lectures
  • Seminars
  • Refresher courses
  • Colloquiums

Credit Rules: Category 2: Work-Based Activities

This category recognises professional work and mentoring activities.

1. Engineering Work

  • 1 credit = 400 hours worked
  • Maximum: 2 credits (800 hours) per year

Engineering-related work, including management responsibilities, contributes to CPD.

2. Mentoring Activities

  • 1 credit = 50 hours mentoring

Includes:

  • Mentoring candidate professionals
  • In-house training sessions
  • Career guidance

👉 Maximum of 1 credit per year

Category 3: Individual Activities

This includes professional, academic, and self-development activities.

1. Membership of Professional Bodies

  • 1 credit per year

Membership of recognised voluntary associations such as SARF contributes to CPD.

2. Other Activities

  • 1 credit = 10 hours
  • Maximum: 3 credits (30 hours) per year

Examples of Recognised Activities:

  • Part-time lecturing → 1 credit per 10 hours
  • Supervision of postgraduate students → 2 credits per year
  • Oral examinations → 1 credit per 10 hours
  • External examination of dissertations/theses → 2 credits per year
  • Research publications:
    • Single author → 2 credits per publication
    • Co-author → 1 credit per author
  • Technical articles → 1 credit per article
  • Conference presentations → 1 credit per presentation
  • Committee participation → 1 credit per 10 hours
  • Accreditation or evaluation work → 1 credit per 10 hours

Additional Qualifications

  • Completed postgraduate qualification → 5 credits

Self-Study

  • 1 credit per 10 hours of study

Examples:

  • Journals
  • Technical publications
  • Online/e-learning content

👉 All self-study activities must be verified

IMPORTANT NOTE

Activities must be relevant, verifiable, and properly recorded

A maximum of 3 credits per year may be earned under Category 3
